A feature film on a 1960’s psychiatrist that uses LSD to treat his patients. A documentary about Giant swamp rats and their plan to take Louisiana. A short film about an underground group of book sniffers. Those are just a few of the subjects touched on by the plethora of films shown over the weekend at the 15th Oxford Film Festival. There was something there for every movie lover and it was successful thanks to the collective efforts of filmmakers, organizers, volunteers, and a supportive Oxford community.

Sam Cox, a junior IMC and cinema student, was a first-time audience member and filmmaker with his short film “Closed” shown in the festival’s community nIght. Sam walked away with positive feeling’s about how the festival engages with Oxford filmmakers.

“It was really fun.  It’s easy to get involved even if you’ve never touched a camera at all so I think its very inclusive,” said Cox.

Award-winning filmmaker and Slamdance Film Festival co-founder Dan Mirvish, whose film Bernard and Huey was featured in the festival, sat down with Rebel Radio and had a few words of encouragement for budding filmmakers.

“You can shoot a movie on an i-phone. Doesn’t mean you always should, but you can. It’s not about the medium as much. It’s about what goes into it. As long as you’ve like got a good story to tell, a style, or a character you should just run with it.”
